Ducommun was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, on July 3, 1952. He grew up on a farm and began doing stand-up comedy in his teens. Ducommun's film career began in the mid-1980s with small roles in films such as No Small Affair (1984) and A Fine Mess (1986). He had his breakthrough role in 1989 as Art Weingartner, the nosy neighbor in Joe Dante's The 'Burbs. He followed that up with a starring role in Little Monsters (1989), as the monster-fighting kid's show host.
